How big is a 12 cm tattoo?
updated
A 12 cm tattoo measures 12 cm (4.7 in) along its longest side: a little shorter than a smartphone, or a bank card and a half laid end to end. It is a medium piece. Studio size guides place 10–15 cm on the forearm, chest and upper back, and 12 cm gives a design room for shading.
How big is 12 cm, next to things you can hold?
Twelve centimetres is 4.7 inches. A bank card is 8.56 cm long, so a 12 cm tattoo is a card plus about a third of another. Five £1 coins in a row come to 11.7 cm, almost exactly the same length. A smartphone is roughly 15 cm tall, so 12 cm is about four-fifths of a phone. On an A4 sheet, 12 cm is a little over half the short side (21 cm).
Tattoo sizes are given by the longest side, so a "12 cm tattoo" can be a tall 12 × 5 cm snake or a round 12 × 12 cm mandala, and the two cover very different amounts of skin. When people search for a "12cm tattoo size", the length is what the artist will quote and price from, and the width follows from the design. If you think in inches, a 5 inch tattoo is 12.7 cm, so this page is the one for you too. A "12 inch tattoo" is a different thing altogether: 30.5 cm, a large back or thigh piece, covered on the 30 cm page.
What a 12 cm tattoo looks like on the forearm, chest and back
These three pictures show the same size on three placements, on plaster casts scaled to adult proportions. The framing for each area is the same on every size page (45 cm of body from top to bottom of the forearm picture, 50 cm for the chest, 60 cm for the back), so you can flick between this page, the 10 cm page and the 15 cm page and compare them directly. At 12 cm the serpent takes up about a quarter of the forearm picture's height, the eagle about a quarter of the chest picture, and the rhinoceros a fifth of the back picture.

Where does a 12 cm tattoo fit best?
The Sydney Tattoo Convention's size guide lists 10–12 cm for the forearm, the upper back and the chest, and Bosphorus Ink puts medium pieces at 7–15 cm. By both measures 12 cm sits in the middle of the medium range. How it looks depends on the area:
- On the forearm, a full wrist-to-elbow piece is 15–20 cm, so 12 cm covers most of the outer forearm and still leaves clear skin at the wrist and the elbow crease. Upright designs suit it best.
- On the upper arm and the calf, medium runs 8–15 cm, and 12 cm sits on the outer face of the muscle without wrapping far round it.
- On the chest, a medium piece on one side is 10–15 cm. At 12 cm a design covers most of one pectoral, which is why the eagle reads as a chest piece in its own right.
- On the upper back, medium runs up to 20 cm, so 12 cm is a contained piece between the shoulder blades with plenty of skin round it. That suits a single image you may want to add to later.
- On the thigh, 12 cm is where medium starts. It works, but on a large thigh it can look like a patch.
- On the inner wrist or the ankle, the size chart tops out at 4–7 cm, so 12 cm no longer fits there and would run onto the forearm or shin.
What detail survives at 12 cm?
Over the years ink settles under the skin and lines spread a little. Vatican Tattoo Studio describes edges going slightly fuzzy around five years and visible line thickening by about ten, and Black Hat Tattoo says lines "soften slightly and spread a little", which is why gaps between lines need breathing room. At 12 cm a design has space for that: an animal, a flower or a dagger can carry inner lines, hatching and areas of shading with clear skin between them.
Lettering is the part to check. Vatican Tattoo Studio advises against script with capitals smaller than about 3–4 mm, while Black Hat Tattoo says there is no universal millimetre rule and the spacing between and inside letters matters more. Bosphorus Ink gives 8–15 cm as the smallest size for a short sentence, so a line of text at 12 cm along a forearm is reasonable, but a sentence squeezed into the bottom of a 12 cm picture is not. Any part of the design drawn much smaller than the whole, such as a face, an eye or a date, is what will blur first.
How long does a 12 cm tattoo take?
Estimates vary with the design more than the size. Platinum Ink, an Austin studio, says medium tattoos often take two to four hours. Aloha Tattoos gives three to five hours for a medium forearm or calf piece. The Skin Design Tattoos chart puts a 4–5 inch piece (10–13 cm) at five to eight hours, and the same studio notes that a small piece with many fine details can take longer than a larger, simpler one. Most 12 cm tattoos are done in one sitting; a heavily shaded one may need a second.
How does 12 cm read from a distance?
Across a room, the outline and the large dark areas of a 12 cm tattoo carry, and fine hatching blends into grey. On a forearm that is enough to recognise the subject from a few metres away. On the back, the same piece is clearly a single image with space round it. If the design depends on fine detail to make sense, look at it small on screen, about the size it will appear from a step or two back, before you decide.
12 cm or the sizes either side?
Going down to 10 cm keeps a forearm piece clear of the elbow and reads as a mid-sized tattoo on most areas. Going up to 15 cm fills most of a forearm and starts to look like a large piece. The tattoo size chart has the typical ranges for every placement side by side.
Questions
How big is a 12 cm tattoo in inches?
A 12 cm tattoo is 4.7 inches on its longest side. That is a little shorter than a smartphone and about the length of five £1 coins in a row. A 5 inch tattoo is 12.7 cm, so the two sizes are close.
Is 12 cm a big tattoo?
It is a medium tattoo. Studio size guides put medium pieces at roughly 7 to 15 cm. On a forearm, 12 cm covers most of the outer side; on the upper back it is a contained piece with plenty of skin around it.
Where does a 12 cm tattoo look best?
The forearm, one side of the chest, the upper arm, the calf and the upper back all suit 12 cm. It is too large for the inner wrist or ankle, and on a large thigh it can look small for the area.
Will a 12 cm tattoo wrap around the forearm?
Partly, if it runs across the arm. Placed that way, a 12 cm design covers much of the forearm's width and curves round the sides, so you can't see all of it from any one angle. Placed lengthways, it runs straight down the arm. The planner measures the 12 cm along the curve of the cast, so turn the view to see how much shows from the front.
Can a 12 cm tattoo include lettering?
Yes, if the letters have room. Studios advise against script with capitals under about 3 to 4 mm and stress spacing between letters. A single line along a 12 cm forearm piece works; a sentence squeezed into a small corner of it will blur.
Before you book
Measure the spot on yourself with a tape that follows the curve of the skin, and mark both ends of 12 cm with a pen. Then put your design on one of plan.tattoo's 74 plaster bodies at 12 cm, turn it to see how it wraps, and take both the measurement and the pictures to your artist. How to plan a tattoo covers the rest.
