Ribs tattoos: size and placement

updated

A ribs tattoo is usually 10–20 cm (4–8 in) on its longest side; a large ribs piece runs 20–30 cm (8–12 in). Long and gently curved, for tall designs that flow with the body.

Which designs suit the ribs

Long and gently curved, for tall designs that flow with the body. Hidden by clothes. It moves with breathing and wraps around to the back, so check it from the side. A tall piece like the dragon woodcut runs up the side at 18 cm.

Before you book

Measure the spot on yourself along the skin, following the curve, not in a straight line. Bring the size in centimetres to your artist, with front and side views: how to plan a tattoo covers the rest.
